Planetary Geologic Mapping Workshop

We’re offering a workshop in planetary geologic mapping — let us share some information about it!

Planetary Geologic Mapping Workshop 2022

This expenses-paid workshop, sponsored by NASA’s Topical Workshops, Symposia, and Conferences (TWSC) Program, will be based in Flagstaff, AZ, with its rich tradition in planetary geology. Flagstaff is home to the USGS Astrogeology Science Center, which coordinates the publication of NASA-funded planetary geologic maps. In addition, Flagstaff hosts Lowell Observatory, with its unique history in planetary discovery. The workshop will be run out of the Northern Arizona University Astronomy and Planetary Science Department, which has expertise and involvement in a wide range of planetary geologic investigations.

The workshop is currently scheduled as an in-person event for June 23-July 1, 2022.

Any updates to that information will be posted on this website.

The workshop will provide training in geologic mapping. Activities will include:

  • pre-workshop exercises;
  • in-classroom mapping exercises using a variety of technologies;
  • field excursions to compare mapping results to ground-truth and enable map revision;
  • synthesis of the results into a planetary geologic map; and
  • presentation of the maps for discussion and critique, both within the workshop framework and with the larger Flagstaff geoscience community.

Through these activities, the workshop will provide critical experience with both terrestrial and planetary sites to planetary geologists and mappers. The outcome will include the development of skill in and appreciation for planetary geologic mapping as a fundamental tool in planetary exploration.

A draft schedule is available here.

Regarding the field elements of this workshop — We welcome diversity, including individuals with different physical, mental, or sensory abilities. Such different abilities are not uniquely disqualifying, although might require particular accommodations and considerations on our part. Please see the FAQs page for more information.

This workshop targets 1) geology majors who will be juniors or seniors by Summer 2022 and are interested in pursuing geology beyond Earth either as part of their undergrad or post-undergrad, 2) graduate students interested in planetary geologic mapping, and 3) early-career faculty and non-traditional students interested in expanding their skill sets to include planetary geologic mapping. Lodging and per diem will be provided, and pre-approved travel costs within the United States will be reimbursed.

Workshop leaders:

Devon Burr, Professor, Northern Arizona University, Astronomy and Planetary Science

Jeanette Luna, Associate Professor, Tennessee Technical University, Earth Sciences

Zoe Learner Ponterio, Manager of the Spacecraft Planetary Image Facility (SPIF) at Cornell University

James (Jim) Skinner, Jr., Planetary Geologic Mapping Coordinator, USGS Astrogeology Science Center

Sarah Black, Tanaka-Greeley Fellow, USGS Astrogeology Science Center
