Project Description

The purpose of this capstone project is to conduct an investigation and develop a feasibility study in order to aid Nestle Purina in maximizing efficiency in their water usage.  Currently, Nestle Purina discharges approximately 20% of their potable water intake for daily boiler operations, as Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) concentrate, to the sewer.  Nestle Purina’s ambition is to utilize this R.O. concentrate water, and provide the company with financial return.

Description of final products

The final product will be an improvement upon Nestle Purina’s current water distribution system, treatment process, and water usage efficiency.  The design solution may include pipes, equalization tanks, pumps, valves, fittings, and bracing members.  The final product has the potential to reuse approximately 5000 gallons per day.

 

Scope of Services:

The project will be conducted in three phases.  The first phase involves analysis of the existing conditions and processes within the plant, and collection of data relative to processes involving water.  The second phase includes design of solutions.  Multiple designs will be created and thoroughly considered.  Criteria that must be considered when designing a solution includes, but is not limited to, client and stakeholder requirements, and limitations regarding space, cost, construction duration and practicality.  The final phase of the project includes oversight of the design implementation.  Project coordination will be crucial for successful implementation of the design solution. 

Phase 1

To keep open line of communication between client, stakeholders, and team members through project schedule, meeting minutes, and weekly updates.

Each process involving water is to bee cataloged and visually represented in a water map which will be utilized to identify locations for recycling purposes.  Water analysis of RO concentrate will properly catalog the quality of water intended for reuse. 

Identify restrictions from EPA, City of Flagstaff, and Nestle Purina for water quality.  Other restrictions include cost, subsequent maintenance of implemented solution, and space limitations.  Design must not adversely affect foliage, hinder existing piping, seize up valves, or degrade any existing systems due to nature of recycled water.


Phase 2

Compare capital expenditure, total water savings, practicality of design, and subsequent maintenance of design solutions in a decision matrix.  Preliminary sketches and written description of design solution and schedule layout for implementation will be included. 

Selected equipment must be compatible with existing systems; any mechanical equipment must operate on food grade oils.  Equipment must have electrical controls for efficient operation, and be within the operating technician’s skill levels.

Design report includes piping and instrumentation drawings (P&ID), plan drawings, equipment layout drawings, and schedule for project completion.

Contractor selection will be based upon Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) to do mechanical and electrical work.  Contractor will be chosen based on highest value product with the lowest bid, and ability to work within schedule. 


Phase 3

Clients, engineers, maintenance technicians, controls technicians, and contractors will track equipment materials in accordance with Nestle Purina’s engineering standard operating procedures. 

During all equipment installation an engineer will be on-site, and assist with connection between field installed equipment, to Nestle Purina’s operator interface iFix®.  Design team will be on-site to verify contractor installation is correct.

The system will be analyzed to verify that is working to optimum designed specifications.  Design team will provide training to operators and maintenance technicians.

Report will include details of final design, as-built drawings, operating manuals, and maintenance schedules, financial tracking information according to Nestle Purina engineering standards, document of all final changes, and an overall system break down.
