 Project Description

The purpose of the project is to provide a plan for expansion of the existing solar array lot and include a cost estimate & conceptual civil design for Northern Arizona University.  This would increase their power output as part of NAU’s commitment to an environmentally sustainable learning environment. Currently the lot’s energy output operates at 165 KW.  The main goal of the project is to efficiently increase the energy output by 1 Mega Watt (MW), with minimal impact to surrounding areas.

Existing conditions

The site is located on the south end of the Northern Arizona University campus.  Fig 1-1 is an aerial view of the existing project site in relation to I-40 and the south end of the campus. Existing conditions are described as follows.

·         Heavily wooded tree line to the North

·         Rolling hills to the North

·         Fills to the North and West of the lot

·         APS easement to the south of the lot going North East

·         Access road following easement

·         General soil conditions: Clay organics with cobbles and boulders

Description of Final Product

 

The final product will be a set of plans and a design report that will recommend the best plan of expansion. This will be done by surveying, soil analysis, and water analysis. The scope of services will detail each task.

 

Scope of Services

 

Task 1-Project management

Two types of meetings will be conducted to ensure good project progression, project management meetings and client meetings. Project management meetings will be held on a weekly basis to make certain that all the expected outcomes set by the client are met. Client meetings will be held every other Friday, unless noted otherwise, for project progression and updates.

Deliverables: Agenda, minutes, progress for each meeting

Task 2-G.I.S. map

L&L Engineering Inc. will meet with our contact, Drew, to produce a copy of a GIS map of the project area. The area is already mapped so we anticipate two or three meetings max to make sure all questions are answered. The map will help the design team set up a layout of the new lot.

Task 3-Survey analysis

L&L Engineering Inc. will conduct surveying of the current solar array lot. There is already data available; however L&L Engineering Inc. will update the current information.  Detailed and up to date surveying is necessary for the proposed expansion of the lot.  The ultimate purpose of this task is to produce a topographical map and detail the existing conditions and parameters for a cut/fill analysis and a water runoff analysis.

Task 4-Soils analysis

It is essential to understand how the soil will react to loadings applied by new development. That is why it is important to conduct testing on the existing soil.  L&L Engineering Inc. will conduct soil classification and subsurface analysis.

We recommend doing a USCS classification, which gets most of what is needed for estimating shear strength parameters; like friction angle and cohesions.  A direct shear test on the existing soil conditions will be conducted if needed to further analyze the foundation sediments.  This will be determined based upon the proposed loading and settlement capacities.

Important parameters covered by subsurface analysis are:

·         Soils strength

·         Friction angle

·         Cohesion

·         Shear strength

·         Pore pressure

·         Compression

Task 5-Storm water analysis

A storm water analysis will be conducted on the current lot area. It is required by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) that offsite and onsite peak runoffs are maintained before and after construction. The storm water analysis will develop the required information to create parameters for the conceptual design of the proposed layout. From this the team can design ditches, culverts, and erosion control.
